2 Euro Commemorative Coin Portugal 2011 500th Anniversary of the birth of Fernao Mendes Pinto The Portuguese coin of 2011 commemorates the 500th anniversary of explorer Fernão Mendes Pinto (1511–1583). Pinto travelled in Asia and his experiences were published posthumously in 1614 as Peregrinação, a work recording non-European journeys while offering a critical, ironic perspective on Portuguese expansion.
