2 Euro Commemorative Coin Germany 2012 Federal State of Bavaria, Neuschwanstein Castle near Füssen (Bundesländer I) Issued in 2012, Germany’s 2-euro commemorative coin continues the federal-state series by honoring Bavaria through Neuschwanstein Castle. Designed by Erich Ott, its central image presents the landmark from the east, with the gatehouse and decorative towers in the foreground and a majestic Alpine landscape behind them. King Ludwig II commissioned the complex from 1869 as a personal, idealized vision of medieval culture and kingship; the castle was never completed. The design therefore connects Bavaria’s royal past with its romantic scenery and with a monument that has become one of the state’s most recognizable symbols. Mint marks, the designer’s initials, the year, and twelve stars complete the coin.
