2 Euro Commemorative Coin Italy 2012 100th Anniversary of the death of Giovanni Pascoli Italy’s 2012 two-euro commemorative coin marks the centenary of Giovanni Pascoli’s death in 1912. Pascoli (1855–1912) was an influential Italian poet, classical scholar, and university professor. Born in San Mauro in Romagna, he later taught at the universities of Messina and Pisa before returning to Bologna in 1905, where he succeeded his former mentor Giosuè Carducci in the chair of Italian literature. His poetry helped reshape Italian literary expression by giving close attention to nature, rural life, memory, and modest everyday details, while personal bereavements and the ideal of a protected family “nest” remained recurring emotional forces. The coin presents Pascoli’s portrait, accompanied by the dates 1912 and 2012, Italy’s republican monogram, the Rome mint mark, and the designer’s initials.
