2 Euro Commemorative Coin Malta 2012 Majority Representation 1887 Majority Representation 1887 – this 2-euro commemorative coin, issued in 2012, marks a significant stage in Malta’s constitutional history. The Constitution of 1887 introduced representative government for the first time, establishing a council in which a majority of members were chosen by Maltese voters. Although Malta remained under British rule, the arrangement gave local inhabitants a stronger voice in political representation. This form of representative government was not permanent and was abolished again in 1903. Designed by Gianni Bonnici, the coin depicts a cheering crowd in front of the Governor’s Palace in Valletta, surrounded by the twelve stars of the European Union.
