2 Euro Commemorative Coin Greece 2012 10th Anniversary of Euro coins and banknotes Issued in 2012, Greece’s €2 commemorative coin marks the tenth anniversary of the introduction of euro banknotes and coins. On 1 January 2002, euro cash replaced national currencies in everyday transactions across twelve EU Member States, with Greece among the original participants. The jointly issued coin was developed through a Europe-wide design competition followed by an online public vote. Helmut Andexlinger’s winning composition brings together human figures, a ship, a factory and wind turbines. These elements present the euro as a global economic participant and as part of ordinary life, linking it with trade, industry and energy. The coin therefore recalls a decisive stage in European monetary integration.
