2 Euro Commemorative Coin Italy 2012 10th Anniversary of Euro coins and banknotes Italy’s 2012 €2 commemorative coin marks ten years of euro cash, recalling the introduction of euro banknotes and coins on 1 January 2002 in the countries that had adopted the currency at that time. It formed part of a common issue by the euro-area states and was released in Italy on 20 March 2012. The central design was created by Helmut Andexlinger, a designer at the Austrian Mint, and selected through a public competition among citizens and residents of the euro area. A euro sign at the centre expresses the currency’s growing international role. Surrounding imagery links the euro to everyday people, finance, trade, industry, energy, and research: a group of people, the Eurotower, a ship, a factory, and wind turbines. Twelve stars encircle the design as symbols of the European Union.
