2 Euro Commemorative Coin Spain 2012 10th Anniversary of Euro coins and banknotes The Spanish 2‑euro commemorative coin of 2012 celebrates ten years of euro banknotes and coins, first introduced as cash on 1 January 2002 in twelve European countries. In 2012 all euro-area countries marked the anniversary with a common issue. The design by Helmut Andexlinger, an engraver at the Austrian mint, was selected in an online vote in which citizens and residents of the euro area chose from five shortlisted designs. At the centre a world shaped like the euro sign signals the currency’s global importance; a group of people stands for everyday use, the Eurotower for finance, a ship for trade, a factory for industry, and two wind turbines for energy and research and development. The initials “A.H.” appear between the ship and the Eurotower, while the outer ring bears the twelve EU stars with the issuing country and “2002–2012” above and below.
