Its design features Maulbronn Monastery, a Cistercian complex founded in 1147 in southern Germany. The remarkably preserved site documents the evolution of monastic architecture from the twelfth to the sixteenth century, bringing Romanesque and Gothic elements together. The monastery church and its surrounding buildings are complemented by an extensive medieval water-management system of canals, ponds, reservoirs, and drains. Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993, Maulbronn symbolizes enduring cultural memory and the Cistercian order’s architectural and engineering achievements.
