2 Euro Commemorative Coin Spain 2013 Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial - UNESCO World Heritage Sites The 2013 Spanish 2-euro commemorative coin honors the Royal Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial and is part of Spain’s annual series celebrating UNESCO World Heritage sites. The FNMT’s inner design presents a view of the extensive complex, which is administered by the Patrimonio Nacional. Philip II founded El Escorial in 1563 as a votive foundation and as the pantheon for Spanish monarchs beginning with Emperor Charles V; Juan Bautista de Toledo conceived the building and Juan de Herrera completed it after Toledo’s death. The monastery, church, royal palace, school, seminary and library form a late 16th‑century ensemble laid out like a gridiron, a deliberate reference to Saint Lawrence’s martyrdom. The austere Herrerian style shaped Spanish architecture for more than half a century. The coin bears “ESPAÑA” above, “2013” and the mint mark to the right, and twelve stars on the outer ring.
