2 Euro Commemorative Coin Finland 2013 150th Anniversary of the Parliament of 1863 The coin commemorates the resumption of the Diet in 1863 after more than fifty years of interruption and is viewed as a turning point: from that moment legislative work was maintained continuously, the public gained markedly improved opportunities to influence affairs, and the move toward a more modern democracy began. At the same time Alexander II’s language decree set in motion the elevation of Finnish as an administrative language; 1863 is also linked with steps toward a more transparent press and the right to use Finnish. The design shows the stylised date 1863 from which a sprout grows. The lower legend reads SUOMI FINLAND, the mint mark and 2013; the outer ring bears the twelve EU stars. Designer: Petri Neuvonen.
