2 Euro Commemorative Coin Italy 2006 Winter Olympic Games in Turin Italy’s 2006 €2 commemorative coin marks the XX Olympic Winter Games held in Turin from 10 to 26 February, with events also staged at other venues across Piedmont. Their return to Italy after roughly half a century made the Games an important national sporting occasion. The competition brought together 80 nations, 2,508 athletes and 84 events across 15 disciplines. The coin entered circulation on the day of the opening ceremony. Its design brings the sporting event into dialogue with Turin’s identity: a downhill athlete occupies the centre, set against stylised graphic elements. At left are the mint mark “R” and the Mole Antonelliana above the name “TORINO”; the upper field carries “GIOCHI INVERNALI” and the Italian Republic’s monogram.
