Plato established his philosophical school in Athens probably around 387 BCE, after the political upheavals of the late fifth century and the execution of his teacher Socrates. The Academy stood northwest of the city, in an older gymnasium and sacred grove associated with the hero Academus. It became a setting for sustained philosophical inquiry, mathematics, natural study, and reflection on public life. Aristotle was among its most distinguished members, studying there for approximately twenty years before founding the Lyceum. The coin’s profile of Plato evokes this enduring intellectual tradition.
