2 Euro Commemorative Coin Greece 2013 100th Anniversary of the Union of Crete with Greece Issued in 2013, this Greek €2 commemorative coin marks the centenary of Crete’s union with Greece. Strategically positioned between Europe, Asia and Africa, the island had experienced successive foreign rulers, most recently the Ottoman Empire. Following repeated Cretan uprisings, especially the revolt of 1866, Crete became an autonomous Cretan State in 1898 under international supervision, with Prince George of Greece serving as High Commissioner. The political and military changes brought by the Balkan Wars of 1912–13 opened the way to definitive incorporation. The 1913 Treaty of London formally confirmed Crete’s integration into the Greek state. The coin’s image of Cretan rebels raising the Greek flag evokes this long struggle for national union.
