2 Euro Commemorative Coin Italy 2013 700th Anniversary of the birth of Giovanni Boccaccio Italy’s 2013 commemorative €2 coin marks the seventh centenary of Giovanni Boccaccio’s birth. Born in Tuscany in 1313 and deceased at Certaldo in 1375, Boccaccio was both a poet and scholar whose work helped prepare the ground for Renaissance humanism. His best-known achievement, the Decameron, was composed in the aftermath of the plague years, probably between 1348 and 1353. Its one hundred tales present comic, tragic, and everyday experience with unusual narrative sophistication, helping establish vernacular Italian as a language of serious literature. The coin’s central design reproduces Boccaccio’s three-quarter portrait, turned right, from a fresco painted by Andrea del Castagno around 1450 and preserved in Florence’s Uffizi. The inscription gives his name and dates, while twelve stars symbolize the European Union.
