2 Euro Commemorative Coin Italy 2014 200th Anniversary of the foundation of Arma dei Carabinieri Italy’s 2014 commemorative €2 coin marks the 200th anniversary of the Carabinieri. The corps was established in the Kingdom of Sardinia in 1814, when King Victor Emmanuel I sought a dependable institution to restore order after the upheavals of the Napoleonic period. The Royal Patents of 13 July 1814 assigned the Carabinieri a dual responsibility from the outset: defending the state while safeguarding public order and security. This combination of military status and local policing became a defining feature of the institution and helped make it a lasting element of Italian national history. The coin’s central design reinterprets Antonio Berti’s 1973 sculpture “Carabinieri Patrol in a Snowstorm.” The dates 1814 and 2014 frame the bicentenary, while twelve stars signify Europe.
