2 Euro Commemorative Coin Germany 2006 Federal State of Schleswig - Holstein, Holstentor in Lübeck (Bundesländer I) Issued in 2006, this German €2 commemorative coin opened the series devoted to Germany’s sixteen federal states. Its national side depicts the Holsten Gate, Lübeck’s internationally recognizable landmark and a historic entrance to the Hanseatic city. The late-Gothic structure was built between 1464 and 1478 as part of a modernization of Lübeck’s defenses. From the beginning, it served both military protection and civic representation, evoking the city’s importance as a major Hanseatic center of trade and long-distance commerce. Heinz Hoyer’s finely rendered design captures the twin-towered gate and rounded passage while integrating it elegantly with the coin’s outer ring. The inscription Schleswig-Holstein identifies the state represented.
