2 Euro Commemorative Coin Greece 2014 400th Anniversary of the death of Domenikos Theotokopoulos The Greek 2-euro commemorative coin issued in 2014 marks the 400th anniversary of the death of Doménikos Theotokópoulos, known as El Greco, who died in Toledo in 1614. Born in 1541 on Crete, then governed by Venice, he began as an icon painter within the Byzantine tradition. In Venice and Rome he absorbed major lessons from the Italian Renaissance before arriving in Spain in 1577. In Toledo he transformed Greek, Italian, and Spanish influences into a highly distinctive visual language, notable for elongated figures, brilliant colour, and spiritual intensity. His achievement became central to the history of Spanish painting and was especially rediscovered and reassessed during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
