2 Euro Commemorative Coin Greece 2014 150th Anniversary of the Union of the Ionian Islands to Greece Issued in 2014, this Greek 2-euro commemorative coin marks the 150th anniversary of the union of the Ionian Islands, or Eptanisa, with the Greek state. Following the Congress of Vienna, the islands had formed the United States of the Ionian Islands under British protection from 1815. Amid Greece’s political reorganisation and the accession of George I, Britain ended its protectorate, and the islands were ceded to Greece in 1864 and incorporated into the kingdom. The coin expresses this historical connection through a seven-pointed star, with the islands’ emblems placed between its rays. A stylised wave border evokes their maritime geography.
