2 Euro Commemorative Coin Malta 2014 Malta Independence 1964 2014 – Independence, 1964 commemorates Malta’s decisive transition from a British territory to an independent sovereign state. The process followed Prime Minister George Borg Olivier’s formal request for independence on 20 August 1962, subsequent negotiations, and the preparation of a new constitution in 1963. The British Parliament approved the Independence Constitution on 23 July 1964, and Malta became independent on 21 September of that year. The coin is the fourth issue in the “Milestones in Malta’s Constitutional History” series. Its design shows a young woman representing Malta and holding the Maltese flag, drawn from the independence monument in Floriana, created by Ġanni Bonnici in 1989.
