2 Euro Commemorative Coin Italy 2014 450th Anniversary of the birth of Galileo Galilei Italy’s 2014 two-euro commemorative coin marks the 450th anniversary of Galileo Galilei’s birth in Pisa in 1564. A mathematician, physicist and astronomer, Galileo became a defining figure of the Scientific Revolution. His telescopic work from 1609 produced observations such as Jupiter’s moons and the phases of Venus, evidence that strengthened the heliocentric understanding of the cosmos. These conclusions challenged influential religious interpretations of scripture, and in 1633 Galileo was condemned and compelled to recant. The coin presents his head after a portrait by Justus Sustermans held in Florence’s Uffizi Gallery. It pairs the image with Galileo’s astronomical telescope, the Rome Mint mark R, the Italian Republic monogram RI, and the dates 1564–2014.
