2 Euro Commemorative Coin Germany 2015 Federal State of Hesse, St. Paul's Church in Frankfurt (Bundesländer I) Germany continued its Federal States series with the Hesse issue of 2015. The coin presents St Paul’s Church in Frankfurt from a classical viewpoint, emphasizing the relationship between its prominent tower and elliptical church body. St Paul’s Church is a major symbol of German democratic history because the first freely elected German National Assembly met there in 1848. After wartime destruction, the building was reconstructed in 1948 without attempting to erase every trace of that rupture; the roof, deliberately absent from the coin’s view, alludes to this approach to rebuilding. The design therefore brings together architecture, democratic tradition and Frankfurt’s urban history.
