2 Euro Commemorative Coin Spain 2015 UNESCO World Heritage Sites Spain’s 2015 2-euro commemorative coin pays tribute to the Cave of Altamira and is part of the country’s annual series celebrating UNESCO World Heritage sites; the FNMT records it as the sixth issue in that programme. The coin’s national side reproduces an image of the cave or its surrounding place, underlining Altamira’s cultural importance after its inscription in 1985. In 2008 the site was expanded to include additional Paleolithic caves in northern Spain and is now listed as “Cave of Altamira and Paleolithic Cave Art of Northern Spain.” UNESCO situates the cave art within the development of European Paleolithic art and regards it as an outstanding testimony of human cultural history.
