2 Euro Commemorative Coin Finland 2006 100th Anniversary of Universal and Equal Suffrage The coin commemorates the Finnish parliamentary reform of 1906, when the former estate-based system of four estates was replaced by a unicameral parliament and universal, equal suffrage was introduced. From then on all citizens aged 24 and over were enfranchised; voting rights no longer depended on social class or sex, and women were simultaneously granted the right to stand for election. In the first elections in March 1907 nineteen women won seats, becoming the world’s first female members of parliament. The design features two facing profiles, male and female, divided by a flowing line; the field reads 1.10.1906 at left and "20 FI 06" at right, with the outer ring showing twelve EU stars. Pertti Mäkinen is named designer; the coin was issued in October 2006, with mintage and issue details recorded.
