2 Euro Commemorative Coin Italy 2015 750th Anniversary of the birth of Dante Alighieri Italy’s 2015 commemorative €2 coin marks the 750th anniversary of Dante Alighieri’s birth. Born in Florence in 1265, Dante was a poet, writer, political thinker, and one of the decisive figures in the development of Italian literary culture. The central design shows him holding the Divine Comedy, while the mountain of Purgatory rises behind him. This scene is adapted from a detail of Domenico di Michelino’s 1465 painting Allegory of the Divine Comedy, located in Florence’s cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore. The coin therefore links Dante’s medieval literary legacy with a celebrated work of Florentine art. The dates 1265 and 2015 identify the anniversary and issue year; “RI” denotes the Italian Republic and “R” the Rome Mint.
