Born in Genoa in 1451, Columbus made four transatlantic voyages between 1492 and 1504 under Spanish sponsorship. His expeditions opened a new chapter in European exploration and helped initiate the colonisation of the Americas, a development with profound and lasting historical consequences. The coin’s design places a portrait of Columbus alongside three caravels, recalling the voyages that crossed the Atlantic. A compass rose adds a clear maritime reference. The dates “1506–2006” appear on a scroll, while the inscription “SAN MARINO” identifies the issuing state. Together, these elements connect the commemorative subject with the navigational setting of his journeys.
