2 Euro Commemorative Coin San Marino 2015 25th Anniversary of the German Reunification This commemorative issue marks twenty-five years since Germany regained its national unity. On 3 October 1990, the German Democratic Republic entered the constitutional sphere of the Federal Republic of Germany, bringing the country’s post-war division to an end. San Marino honored this decisive event with a coin issued on 1 September 2015. The design features the Brandenburg Gate, a landmark that stood in East Berlin during the Cold War and consequently became closely associated with Germany’s division. Two interlocking depictions of the monument express the reunification of Berlin’s formerly separated parts. The dates “1990–2015” identify the anniversary, while the initials “ES” acknowledge the artist Erik Spiekermann.
