According to Ljubljana’s municipal heritage information, the colony Colonia Iulia Aemona was certainly present by about AD 14, while an inscription records a benefaction from Emperors Augustus and Tiberius. Positioned along important regional routes, Emona contributed to the Roman defensive system and developed according to Roman urban, political and religious models. Its inhabitants practiced farming, commerce and crafts. The settlement remained active from the early Roman period into Late Antiquity, and its 2014–2015 anniversary celebrations highlighted this foundational layer of Ljubljana’s history.
