In 1215, a Genoese frontier fortress was built on the Rock of Monaco; only over the following centuries did it become the Grimaldi residence. The tower on the coin therefore evokes more than medieval defensive architecture: it recalls how Monaco's political history has remained tied to this commanding Mediterranean site.
