A native of Marousi, Louis became famous at the first modern Olympic Games, held in Athens in 1896. In the marathon, an event created for those Games and inspired by the story of the ancient messenger from Marathon, he defeated the international field as the victorious Greek competitor. His finish before a huge home crowd transformed him overnight into a national hero. The coin’s design unites Louis’s likeness with the winner’s cup presented to him and the Panathenaic Stadium, linking the athlete to the setting of Greece’s celebrated Olympic triumph.
