2 Euro Commemorative Coin Germany 2007 Federal State of Mecklenburg - Vorpommern, Schwerin Castle (Bundesländer I) Issued in 2007, Germany’s commemorative 2-euro coin presents Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania through its most recognizable landmark, Schwerin Palace. Built on an island, the complex served for centuries as the residence of the dukes of Mecklenburg. Under Grand Duke Friedrich Franz II, it was transformed in the nineteenth century into a magnificent Romantic Historicist palace, incorporating the work of several architects. Its modern civic role is equally important: since 1990, the palace has been the constitutionally designated seat of the state parliament. The coin’s design emphasizes the island setting with water and a bridge, while also rendering the façades, towers, roofs, embankments, trees, and palace garden. The image therefore links regional history, architecture, landscape, and democratic identity.
