2 Euro Commemorative Coin Greece 2015 30th Anniversary of the EU Flag The Greek 2-euro commemorative coin issued in 2015 marks the 30th anniversary of the European flag becoming an official emblem of the European Communities. Its origins reach back to 1955, when the Council of Europe adopted a circle of twelve gold stars on a blue field. In June 1985, the leaders of the European Communities approved the same emblem for their institutions, and it was first raised outside the Berlaymont building in Brussels in 1986. The coin’s design by Georgios Stamatopoulos transforms the twelve stars into human figures embracing one another, evoking a new and united Europe. It honours a symbol of unity, solidarity and harmony.
