2 Euro Commemorative Coin Italy 2015 30th Anniversary of the EU Flag Italy’s 2015 €2 commemorative coin marks thirty years since the European flag became the emblem of the European Communities. The Council of Europe had selected the familiar design in 1955, while European leaders adopted it for the Communities in June 1985; their institutions began using it the following year. The twelve gold stars arranged in a circle do not correspond to the number of member states. Instead, they express the ideas of unity, solidarity and harmony shared across Europe. The Italian design turns this established symbol into a visual narrative. At its centre, the stars gradually become human figures, suggesting the birth of a new Europe founded on people and common ideals. The inscription “REPUBBLICA ITALIANA,” the dates 1985–2015 and Georgios Stamatopoulos’s initials complete the commemorative composition.
