2 Euro Commemorative Coin Malta 2015 30th Anniversary of the EU Flag 30th Anniversary of the European Flag: Malta issued this €2 commemorative coin in 2015 as part of a joint release by the euro-area countries, marking the European Communities’ adoption of the flag in 1985. The emblem had already been adopted by the Council of Europe in 1955; in 1985 it became the official symbol of the European Communities, and the institutions of today’s European Union began using it in 1986. The coin therefore recalls the emergence of a shared European identity. Designed by Georgios Stamatopoulos, its twelve stars transform into human figures embracing the idea of a new, united Europe.
