2 Euro Commemorative Coin Portugal 2015 30th Anniversary of the EU Flag This Portuguese 2 euro commemorates the 30th anniversary of the European flag’s adoption as the emblem of the European Communities in June 1985. Part of a joint issue by euro-area countries, the coin was released on 30 November 2015. The design by Georgios Stamatopoulos was chosen by a public online vote from five finalists. The reverse shows the EU flag with twelve stars transforming into human figures to suggest the birth of a new Europe. PORTUGAL and 1985–2015 appear above right, the artist’s initials lower right, and the outer ring bears twelve five-pointed stars.
