2 Euro Commemorative Coin Estonia 2016 100th Anniversary of the birth of Paul Keres Estonia dedicated this commemorative coin to Paul Keres, born on 7 January 1916 and remembered as a globally renowned Estonian chess grandmaster. His public life was inseparable from chess, a field through which he became one of the country’s best-known personalities. The design translates that legacy into a compact visual tribute: Keres’s portrait forms the focal point, while a group of chess pieces evokes the intellectual discipline, calculation and imagination associated with his career. His name, “PAUL KERES,” follows the upper edge in a broad semicircle. “EESTI” identifies the issuing country on the left, with “2016” beneath it, and the twelve stars of the European flag encircle the national side. Riho Luuse’s winning design therefore links an individual biography with Estonian cultural identity and a universally recognizable emblem of strategic thought. Eesti Pank released the specially designed circulation coin to commercial banks on 7 January 2016.
