2 Euro Commemorative Coin Luxembourg 2016 50th Anniversary of the 'Grand Duchess Charlotte Bridge' The coin marks the fiftieth anniversary of the opening of the bridge named after Grand Duchess Charlotte, which links Luxembourg’s upper town with the Kirchberg plateau, home to European Union institutions. The scheme originated in an international competition announced by the government in 1957; construction spanned 1962 to 1966. In October 1966 the bridge entered service and was inaugurated by Grand Duchess Charlotte. The design features the bridge with the French inscription “Pont Grande‑Duchesse Charlotte” and the date “1966” below; above appears the portrait of Grand Duke Henri, with “2016” to the left and “LUXEMBOURG” at the base. Twelve EU stars frame the outer ring. Egon Jux is cited as the bridge’s architect; a collector reference credits Herbert Wähner as the coin’s designer.
