2 Euro Commemorative Coin Monaco 2016 150th Anniversary of the foundation of Monte Carlo by Charles III Charles III ruled Monaco during a financially difficult period, after the Principality had lost much of its former territory. The development of Monte Carlo, named after him and centred on the casino, became a way to create new revenues and international attention. By pairing his portrait with the cityscape, the coin marks a turning point in which a small principality became a place known around the world.
