2 Euro Commemorative Coin Italy 2016 2200th Anniversary of the death of Tito Maccio Plautus Italy’s 2016 two-euro commemorative coin marks the 2,200th anniversary of the death of Titus Maccius Plautus, one of the major comic playwrights of early Latin literature. Born in Sarsina, Plautus was active during the late third and early second centuries BC, and his death is traditionally placed in 184 BC. His plays drew on Greek New Comedy but transformed its plots into a distinctly Roman theatrical idiom, combining lively dialogue, musical passages, inventive metre, and broad stage humour. The coin’s central design reproduces a Roman mosaic from the first century BC showing a tragic mask beside a comic mask. The composition also identifies Plautus and places the commemorated year, 184 BC, alongside the modern issue year, 2016.
