2 Euro Commemorative Coin Italy 2016 550th Anniversary of the death of Donatello Italy’s 2016 commemorative €2 coin marks the 550th anniversary of Donatello’s death in 1466. Donato di Niccolò di Betto Bardi was one of the defining sculptors of the early Renaissance, especially in Florence. His work joined renewed engagement with classical art to a fresh concern for lifelike posture, psychological presence, and convincing spatial narrative. Florence’s Bargello National Museum, which holds the world’s largest concentration of Donatello’s works, provides an important setting for understanding his influence on the city’s artistic transformation. The coin presents the head of Donatello’s bronze David, a sculpture made for the Medici and a landmark in Renaissance art. The design also includes Italy’s “RI” emblem, the dates 1466 and 2016, and designer Claudia Momoni’s initials.
