2 Euro Commemorative Coin Malta 2016 Malta's Prehistoric Monuments - UNESCO World Heritage Site Ġgantija Temples – Issued in 2016, this Maltese €2 commemorative coin launched a seven-issue series dedicated to Malta’s prehistoric monuments recognized as UNESCO World Heritage. Its subject is the temple complex on Gozo, comprising two megalithic structures dated approximately to 3600–3200 BC. Ġgantija is therefore among the world’s oldest surviving free-standing stone and religious buildings, and since 1980 it has formed part of the UNESCO World Heritage site known as the Megalithic Temples of Malta. The central design feature is a stylized depiction of the temples, accompanied by their date, Malta’s name, and the year of issue.
