2 Euro Commemorative Coin Greece 2016 120th Anniversary of the birth of Dimitri Mitropoulos Issued by Greece in 2016, this €2 commemorative coin marks the 120th anniversary of the birth of Dimitri Mitropoulos (1896–1960), one of the twentieth century’s notable conductors. Born in Athens and trained at the Athens Conservatory, he combined exceptional pianism, compositional insight, and intensely expressive orchestral leadership. After formative European appointments, he became principal conductor of the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra from 1937 to 1949, then served as Music Director of the New York Philharmonic from 1949 to 1958. Mitropoulos championed Mahler and contemporary composers, while also making a lasting contribution to operatic performance, especially at the Metropolitan Opera. His portrait against musical notation presents him as a Greek figure of international cultural importance.
