2 Euro Commemorative Coin Luxembourg 2017 50th Anniversary of the voluntariness of the Luxembourg army In 2017 Luxembourg issued a 2‑euro piece to mark the reform of 28 June 1967, which ended conscription and established voluntary military service. The Luxembourg Army’s anniversary notice lists this coin among the commemorative activities. The design, credited to a team at the Banque centrale du Luxembourg, places a right‑facing portrait of Grand Duke Henri at the right. To the left runs the legend “50 Joer Fräiwëllegen‑Arméi” (“50 Years of the Volunteer Army”), with the year 2017 above and “LËTZEBUERG” below. The inner field is ringed by the twelve European stars. This issue carries the winged caduceus of the Dutch mint and the sailing‑ship mark of the responsible Dutch mint director. In context, women were admitted in 1987; since 20 December 2002, nationals of other EU member states have also been allowed to volunteer.
