2 Euro Commemorative Coin Italy 2017 400th Anniversary of the completion of St Mark's Basilica in Venice Italy’s 2017 €2 commemorative coin marks the 400th anniversary of the completion of St Mark’s Basilica in Venice. The date 1617 refers to a significant final phase in the monument’s development: according to the Procuratoria di San Marco, the altars of the Nicopeia and the Blessed Sacrament were arranged on either side of the main altar that year. The basilica has a much longer history. Construction of the present church began in 1063, its consecration took place in 1094, and its appearance continued to evolve through later mosaics, sculpture, chapels, and other additions. The coin depicts the basilica’s façade, accompanied by “VENEZIA,” “SAN MARCO,” the dates 1617 and 2017, and the Italian Republic’s monogram.
