2 Euro Commemorative Coin Estonia 2017 Estonia's road to the Independence This commemorative issue looks back to the political events of 1917 that helped prepare the creation of an independent Estonian state. Its historical focus is the Estonian Provincial Assembly, known as the Maapäev. On 26 June 1917, the newspaper Tallinna Teataja published the rules governing the election of the provincial council, including its procedures and timetable. The subsequent elections and decisions of the assembly laid important groundwork for the proclamation of the Republic of Estonia on 24 February 1918. The design translates this difficult path into the image of a gracefully curving oak trunk. Bare branches evoke the upheaval and hardship of 1917; the leaves suggest Estonia’s strength, achievements and enduring vitality. “MAAPÄEV” and “1917” are placed at lower left, while “EESTI” and “2017” appear at lower right. Jaan Meristo’s design also recalls the oak leaves of Estonia’s large state coat of arms.
