2 Euro Commemorative Coin Greece 2017 60th Anniversary of the death of Nikos Kazantzakis Greece’s 2017 €2 commemorative coin marks the 60th anniversary of the death of Nikos Kazantzakis (1883–1957), a defining figure of modern Greek literature. Born in Crete, then part of the Ottoman Empire, he studied law in Athens and philosophy under Henri Bergson in Paris. His wide-ranging output included novels, plays, travel writing, translations and the monumental “Odyssey”; internationally, he became especially associated with “Zorba the Greek” and “The Last Temptation of Christ.” Kazantzakis also briefly served as a government minister in 1945 and later worked for UNESCO. The coin’s profile portrait honours a major twentieth-century Greek literary voice.
