2 Euro Commemorative Coin San Marino 2017 International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development This commemorative issue is dedicated to the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development, proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly for 2017. The initiative called attention to the need to connect tourism with lasting development. It encouraged governments, businesses and travellers to pursue approaches that respect the environment while also taking social responsibility into account. San Marino released its coin in September 2017 as a contribution to this international theme. Its central design presents the Earth surrounded by waves, an image that conveys the worldwide reach of tourism and the importance of protecting the places it touches. The design is credited to Canadian artist Andrew Lewis, with Uliana Pernazza identified as the engraver.
