2 Euro Commemorative Coin Belgium 2017 200th Anniversary of the University of Ghent Ghent University was also founded in 1817 and is one of Belgium’s major research universities. Its anniversary highlights a long relationship between scholarship, urban history and social change. A particularly important development was its transition to Dutch as the language of instruction in 1930, a milestone in Belgium’s linguistic history. The coin therefore honours more than institutional age; it recognises a university that links research, innovation and cultural self-assertion.
