2 Euro Commemorative Coin Greece 2017 Archeological site of Philippi Issued in 2017, Greece’s 2-euro commemorative coin honors the archaeological site of Philippi, one of the most significant historical landscapes in northern Greece. King Philip II of Macedon founded the city in 356 BCE beside the strategically important Via Egnatia. After the Battle of Philippi in 42 BCE, Roman rule reshaped it into a “small Rome,” adding a forum and monumental religious buildings. A new spiritual chapter began with the Apostle Paul’s visit around 49–50 CE, when Philippi became an early stronghold of Christianity. The coin depicts part of Basilica B together with a linear ornament inspired by an ancient Greek mosaic discovered at the site.
