2 Euro Commemorative Coin Estonia 2018 100th Anniversary of the Foundation of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania share this commemorative issue, created to mark a century of renewed statehood across the Baltic region. In 1918, Estonia and Latvia established their republics, while Lithuania restored its state. Their anniversaries are observed on 16 February, 24 February and 18 November respectively. The subject also reaches beyond a single historical date: it evokes the countries’ intertwined past, their determination to defend freedom and sovereignty, and the recovery of independence in the early 1990s. The coin’s central image turns that shared story into a visual metaphor. Three strands are woven together like a braid, suggesting the Baltic nations as closely connected sisters. At their ends, the strands merge into the coats of arms of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, while the whole design points toward a common past, present and future. A stylised centenary mark appears beside “EESTI” and “2018”. Twelve European stars frame the national design, and the winning concept, “Baltic sisters”, was chosen in a public vote from the three countries.
