2 Euro Commemorative Coin San Marino 2018 500th Anniversary of the birth of Tintoretto San Marino’s 2018 commemorative issue marks the 500th anniversary of the birth of Jacopo Tintoretto, the Venetian painter whose work helped define sixteenth-century art. Born in Venice in 1518 or 1518/19, he spent his life there and died in 1594. The uncertainty surrounding the exact year reflects the incomplete record of his birth, while the anniversary itself highlights his enduring place in the artistic history of Venice and the Renaissance. The coin’s central image comes from Tintoretto’s painting The Visitation. It focuses on the embrace of the Virgin Mary and Elisabeth, capturing the human encounter at the heart of the scene. The dates 1518–2018 identify the commemorative connection between the artist’s birth and the year of issue. San Marino released the coin in April 2018.
